That you can tell when a watermelon is ripe
by this itty bitty twisty tendril on the stem?
When that melon is red and juicy and ready to go
the twisty little tendril shrivels right up,
signaling Go on the big SNIP
Who knew?
Those were some darn clever souls on the Watermelon Committee, I say.
This is our first year harvesting watermelons. We planted some last year before our sudden mid-summer move. They were so beautiful when we left. (sigh) A gift for the new owners, I soothed myself. I wasn't sure whether they'd grow in our new desert climate, but lookie here!
