We have some new little friends at our house. Just hatched last week.

We drove out to the country and let the kids hand pick their own baby chicks from a farmer's lot. There were some hatching the moment we arrived, and we watched tiny little lives emerge from the shells, stretch themselves with their matted feathers and blink at the world around them for the very first time.

Their soft little chirps have echoed through our home since Saturday. Spring is alive!

And my children are learning to care for baby animals for the very first time. They have pleaded for a cat or a dog, but I think these 6 little chicks have surpassed their wildest pet dreams for the time being.

And they're not the only ones growing attached to the soft, chirping balls of fluff. Every time I walk by, they tug at my maternal heartstrings; they're so sweet and tiny and soft and...motherless!

My little crew is doing such a good job of loving them to pieces, I'm afraid we're all going to be heartbroken when they have to leave in a few weeks.
The neighborhood association would not stand for full grown hens in our backyard, and definitely wouldn't be keen on our lone little rooster. But I have a dream....and this is only the beginning.

where will they go? i dream of having chickens but i think my property is too small. i always have big dreams but then reality is always different.
What a fun adventure! Before they go, can I bring my kids to see them? How forward is that to invite myself over?! I don't know if your husband told you, but Monday I called last minute to see if you and the kids wanted to meet us at a park. You were out like a good mom taking the kids on a field trip. We'll have to do it some other time if you are interested. Have fun with the chicks!
What a great idea! I know my kids would LOVE this! Can we come see them too?
When I was little, my dad would get baby chicks for us on Easter. He has several chickens and some roosters in his back yard, and an incubator for their eggs. It's been fun for the kids to watch them hatch. The chickens lay brown and green eggs, and my parents never have to buy eggs from the store. My dad loves raising them.
We have eggs in the incubator in the basement. They are set to hatch in 3 days. Honestly, I don't have anything to do with them. They are Grant's babies. But they are super cute when they first hatch and the kids love them. We'll put them on Grandma's property and hope the foxes and hawks don't eat them before they start laying eggs or get big enough to eat.
They do look very cute! What a fun memory for your kids, too! I bet they will never forget the year the chicks came for Easter! =)
